{"id":6,"date":"2025-02-05T12:29:35","date_gmt":"2025-02-05T17:29:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pressbooks.library.torontomu.ca\/accessibledigitalsurveyresearch\/?p=6"},"modified":"2025-03-25T16:37:54","modified_gmt":"2025-03-25T20:37:54","slug":"appendix","status":"publish","type":"back-matter","link":"https:\/\/pressbooks.library.torontomu.ca\/accessibledigitalsurveyresearch\/back-matter\/appendix\/","title":{"raw":"Glossary","rendered":"Glossary"},"content":{"raw":"","rendered":"<dl data-type=\"glossary\">\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-strongaccessibilitystrong\"><strong>Accessibility<strong><\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>The design of products, devices, services or environments so as to be usable by persons with or without disabilities, and includes information and communications.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-strongaistrong\"><strong>AI<strong><\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Artificial Intelligence, also called AI, is technology that helps computers and machines to complete complex tasks that are usually done by humans.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-strongassentstrong\"><strong>Assent<strong><\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>The voluntary participation of those who are unable to legally give consent, either due to age or capacity.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-strongclearstrong\"><strong>CLEAR<\/strong><\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p><strong>C<\/strong>oncise: Keep questions short and simple.<br \/>\n<strong>L<\/strong>anguage: Use plain, inclusive, and accessible language.<br \/>\n<strong>E<\/strong>xclusive vs. Inclusive: Avoid double-barreled questions and offer diverse response options.<br \/>\n<strong>A<\/strong>void Bias: Don\u2019t lead participants to a particular answer.<br \/>\n<strong>R<\/strong>eview: Always pilot your survey before finalizing.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-strongconsentstrong\"><strong>consent<\/strong><\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>To voluntarily agree to an action or procedure using all necessary information to make a rational decision.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-strongconsentstrong\"><strong>Consent<strong><\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>To voluntarily agree to an action or procedure using all necessary information to make a rational decision.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-strongdissentstrong\"><strong>Dissent<\/strong><\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>the inverse of \"assent\". When a person who is unable to legally consent indicates that they do not wish to participate.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-strongdiversitystrong\"><strong>Diversity<\/strong><\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Diversity is a principle which refers to the intentiona representation or composition of various social identity groups (including but not limited to disability, ethnicity, gender, race, sexuality) in a work group, organization, or community.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-strongediastrong\"><strong>EDIA<strong><\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>An acronym, which stands for Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility. It may also be shortened as DEI, DEIA, or EDI.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-strongequitystrong\"><strong>Equity<\/strong><\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Equity is a principle which prioritizes providing resources according to individual need, in order to support structurally and systemically marginalized groups in achieving their highest state of health and wellbeing.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-strongidentity-first-languagestrong\"><strong>Identity-First Language<strong><\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A language style which emphasizes disability as part of an individual's core identity. For example, \"autistic person\" or \"visually impaired person\".<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-stronginclusionstrong\"><strong>Inclusion<\/strong><\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Inclusion is a principle which strives to create environments which offer affirmation, celebration, and appreciation of different approaches, styles, perspectives, and experiences.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-strongleading-questionstrong\"><strong>Leading Question<strong><\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A question which unduly guides a participant toward a specific answer. For example, \"How do you feel about our excellent education system?\".<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-strongpeople-first-languagestrong\"><strong>People-First Language<strong><\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A language style that emphasizes the person before the disability. For example, \"a person with autism\" as opposed to \"an autistic person\".<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-stronguniversal-designstrong\"><strong>Universal Design<\/strong><\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Universal Design (UD) is an approach to design which prioritizes maximizing accessibility and benefits everyone, without adaptations or specialized designs.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-disability\">Disability<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Disability is a complex phenomenon arising from the interaction between features of a person's body and features of the society in which that person lives (World Health Organization, 2001).<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-observe-the-following\">Observe the following<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>\"Observe the following\"; a frequently used phrase by an early 2000's science education icon, Bill Nye the Science Guy (Bill! Bill! Bill!
