black-faced boy now gambols on thy brink,\r\nOr finds beneath thy rocks a place of rest?\r\nWhat naked lad doth linger long by thee,\r\nAnd run and tumble in the sun-scorched sand,\r\nOr heed the pea-dove in the wild fig tree,\r\nWhile I am roaming in an alien land?\r\nNo wonder that my heart is happy never,\r\nI have been faithless to thee, Sukee River.\r\n\r\nWhen from my early wandering I returned,\r\nDid I not promise to remain for aye?\r\nYet instantly for other regions yearned\r\nAnd wearied of thee in a single day.\r\nThy murmurs sound now in my anguished ears,\r\nCreating in my heart a world of pain;\r\nI see thee wistful flowing down the years\r\nAnd though I pine, afar I must remain:\r\nNo wonder that my feet are faltering ever,\r\nI have been faithless to thee, Sukee River.\r\n\r\nThough other boys may frolic by thy side,\r\nI know their merry moods thou dost not heed\r\nWhen I, O mother of my soul and bride,\r\nLie on strange breasts and on strange kisses feed.\r\nSometimes, kind fate permitting me, I dream\r\nI am floating on thy bosom of deep blue,\r\nA child again, beloved, unchanging stream;\r\nBut soon I wake to find it all untrue:\r\nI vowed that never, never would we sever,\r\nBut I've been faithless to thee, Sukee River.","rendered":"
Thou sweet-voiced stream that first gavest me drink,
\nWatched o’er me when I floated on thy
