fatal news that he was bringing.\r\nI heard him listlessly, without a moan,\r\nAlthough the only one I loved was gone.\r\n\r\nII\r\n\r\nThe dawn departs, the morning is begun,\r\nThe trades come whispering from off the seas,\r\nThe fields of corn are golden in the sun,\r\nThe dark-brown tassels fluttering in the breeze;\r\nThe bell is sounding and the children pass,\r\nFrog-leaping, skipping, shouting, laughing shrill,\r\nDown the red road, over the pasture-grass,\r\nUp to the school-house crumbling on the hill.\r\nThe older folk are at their peaceful toil,\r\nSome pulling up the weeds, some plucking corn,\r\nAnd others breaking up the sun-baked soil.\r\nFloat, faintly-scented breeze, at early morn\r\nOver the earth where mortals sow and reap\u2500\r\nBeneath its breast my mother
