{"id":221,"date":"2021-04-05T10:26:29","date_gmt":"2021-04-05T14:26:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pressbooks.library.ryerson.ca\/flintandfeather\/?post_type=chapter&#038;p=221"},"modified":"2022-02-14T13:17:24","modified_gmt":"2022-02-14T18:17:24","slug":"autumns-orchestra","status":"publish","type":"chapter","link":"https:\/\/pressbooks.library.torontomu.ca\/flintandfeather\/chapter\/autumns-orchestra\/","title":{"raw":"Autumn's Orchestra","rendered":"Autumn&#8217;s Orchestra"},"content":{"raw":"<p id=\"letter\"><em>(Inscribed to One Beyond Seas)<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\nKnow by the thread of music woven through\r\nThis fragile web of cadences I spin,\r\nThat I have only caught these songs since you\r\nVoiced them upon your haunting violin.\r\n<h2>The Overture<\/h2>\r\nOctober\u2019s orchestra plays softly on\r\nThe northern forest with its thousand strings,\r\nAnd Autumn, the conductor wields anon\r\nThe Golden-rod\u2014 The baton that he swings.\r\n<h2>The Firs<\/h2>\r\nThere is a lonely minor chord that sings\r\nFaintly and far along the forest ways,\r\nWhen the firs finger faintly on the strings\r\nOf that rare violin the night wind plays,\r\nJust as it whispered once to you and me\r\nBeneath the English pines beyond the sea.\r\n<h2>Mosses<\/h2>\r\nThe lost wind wandering, forever grieves\r\nLow overhead,\r\nAbove grey mosses whispering of leaves\r\nFallen and dead.\r\nAnd through the lonely night sweeps their refrain\r\nLike Chopin\u2019s prelude, sobbing \u2018neath the rain.\r\n<h2>The Vine<\/h2>\r\nThe wild grape mantling the trail and tree,\r\nFestoons in graceful veils its drapery,\r\nIts tendrils cling, as clings the memory stirred\r\nBy some evasive haunting tune, twice heard.\r\n<h2>The Maple<\/h2>\r\n<h3>I<\/h3>\r\nIt is the blood-hued maple straight and strong,\r\nVoicing abroad its patriotic song.\r\n<h3>II<\/h3>\r\nIts daring colours bravely flinging forth\r\nThe ensign of the Nation of the North.\r\n<h2>Hare-Bell<\/h2>\r\nElfin bell in azure dress,\r\nChiming all day long,\r\nRinging through the wilderness\r\nDulcet notes of song.\r\nDaintiest of forest flowers\r\nWeaving like a spell\u2014\r\nMusic through the Autumn hours,\r\nLittle Elfin bell.\r\n<h2>The Giant Oak<\/h2>\r\nAnd then the sound of marching armies \u2018woke\r\nAmid the branches of the soldier oak,\r\nAnd tempests ceased their warring cry, and dumb\r\nThe lashing storms that muttered, overcome,\r\nChoked by the heralding of battle smoke,\r\nWhen these gnarled branches beat their martial drum.\r\n<h2>Aspens<\/h2>\r\nA sweet high treble threads its silvery song,\r\nVoice of the restless aspen, fine and thin\r\nIt trills its pure soprano, light and long\u2014\r\nLike the vibretto of a mandolin.\r\n<h2>Finale<\/h2>\r\nThe cedar trees have sung their vesper hymn,\r\nAnd now the music sleeps\u2014\r\nIts benediction falling where the dim\r\nDusk of the forest creeps.\r\nMute grows the great concerto\u2014and the light\r\nOf day is darkening, Good-night, Good-night.\r\nBut through the night time I shall hear within\r\nThe murmur of these trees,\r\nThe calling of your distant violin\r\nSobbing across the seas,\r\nAnd waking wind, and star-reflected light\r\nShall voice my answering.
