We shall\u00a0never see more of Mr. Hyde.\"<\/p>\r\n<p id=\"id00264\">\"I hope not,\" said Utterson. \"Did I ever tell you that I once saw\u00a0him, and shared your feeling of repulsion?\"<\/p>\r\n<p id=\"id00265\">\"It was impossible to do the one without the other,\" returned\u00a0Enfield. \"And by the way, what an ass you must have thought me,\u00a0not to know that this was a back way to Dr. Jekyll's! It was\u00a0partly your own fault that I found it out, even when I did.\"<\/p>\r\n<p id=\"id00266\">\"So you found it out, did you?\" said Utterson. \"But if that be\u00a0so, we may step into the court and take a look at the windows. To\u00a0tell you the truth, I am uneasy about poor Jekyll; and even\u00a0outside, I feel as if the presence of a friend might do him\u00a0good.\"<\/p>\r\n<p id=\"id00268\">The court was very cool and a little damp, and full of premature\u00a0twilight, although the sky, high up overhead, was still bright\u00a0with sunset. The middle one of the three windows was half-way\u00a0open; and sitting close beside it, taking the air with an\u00a0infinite sadness of mien, like some disconsolate prisoner,\u00a0Utterson saw Dr. Jekyll.<\/p>\r\n<p id=\"id00269\">\"What! Jekyll!\" he cried. \"I trust you are better.\"<\/p>\r\n<p id=\"id00270\">\"I am very low, Utterson,\" replied the doctor, drearily, \"very\u00a0low. It will not last long, thank God.\"<\/p>\r\n<p id=\"id00271\">\"You stay too much indoors,\" said the lawyer. \"You should be out,\u00a0whipping up the circulation like Mr. Enfield and me. (This is my\u00a0cousin\u2014Mr. Enfield\u2014Dr. Jekyll.) Come, now; get your hat and\u00a0take a quick turn with us.\"<\/p>\r\n<p id=\"id00272\">\"You are very good,\" sighed the other. \"I should like to very\u00a0much; but no, no, no, it is quite impossible; I dare not. But\r\nindeed, Utterson, I am very glad to see you; this is really a\u00a0great pleasure; I would ask you and Mr. Enfield up, but the place\u00a0is really not fit.\"<\/p>\r\n<p id=\"id00273\">\"Why then,\" said the lawyer, good-naturedly, \"the best thing we\u00a0can do is to stay down here and speak with you from where we\u00a0are.\"<\/p>\r\n<p id=\"id00274\">\"That is just what I was about to venture to propose,\" returned\u00a0the doctor with a smile. But the words were hardly uttered,\u00a0before the smile was struck out of his face and succeeded\u00a0by an expression of such abject terror and despair, as froze the\u00a0very blood of the two gentlemen below. They saw it but for a\u00a0glimpse, for the window was instantly thrust down; but that\r\nglimpse had been sufficient, and they turned and left the court\u00a0without a word. In silence, too, they traversed the by-street;\u00a0and it was not until they had come into a neighbouring\u00a0thoroughfare, where even upon a Sunday there were still some\u00a0stirrings of life, that Mr. Utterson at last turned and looked at\u00a0his companion.
