All the Public Domain Core Collection Project books have been created in Pressbooks at Ryerson University.\u00a0 They can be used directly as is or copied for additional enhancement.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nPost-secondary Ontario Educators\u00a0 from\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecampusontario.ca\/about\/\">eCampusOntario member institutions<\/a>\u00a0 have access to the\u00a0 Pressbooks software via the <a href=\"https:\/\/ecampusontario.pressbooks.pub\">eCampusOntario Pressbooks site<\/a>. Other educators should check with their library or centre for teaching and learning to see if the institution hosts its own Pressbooks site or if access is available through a regional educational consortium.\r\n<a name=\"glossary\"><\/a>\r\n<h3>Pressbooks Glossaries<\/h3>\r\nPressbooks has a feature that you can use to create a glossary of terms for any book that you would like to customize.\u00a0 Glossary terms<span>\u00a0are underlined in your Pressbooks book, and, when clicked, will display the definition of the word.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Glossaries can either be used by an instructor who wants to provide additional information about the book without interrupting the flow of the text or they can be used as the basis of an open assignment with students.\u00a0 If you would like students to create a glossary, they will need to have Pressbooks accounts that provide editor access to your book.\u00a0 This is not difficult to do, but would work best in a smaller for EDU<\/a>\r\nThis companion to the <em>Pressbooks User Guide<\/em> (above) focuses on many of the features of Pressbooks that are tailored to the educational setting including the use of LaTex, footnotes and references, customizing textboxes, etc.\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/press.rebus.community\/makingopentextbookswithstudents\/\">A Guide to Making Open Text Books with Students<\/a>\r\nThis Rebus Community publication is a handbook for instructors who wish to practice open pedagogy by engaging students in the creation of open educational resources.\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.directory\/\">Pressbooks Directory<\/a>\r\nThis directory lists over 3,000\u00a0 books that have been created using Pressbooks software by a wide range of educational institutions.\u00a0 Openly licensed content\u00a0 (CC BY, CC BY-NC, CC BY- NC-SA, CCO or public domain) can be cloned, revised, remixed and redistributed and modified for your own use (with appropriate attribution).\r\n<a name=\"hypothesis\"><\/a>\r\n<h2>Hypothes.is<\/h2>\r\nHypothes.is is a free web-based social annotation tool that integrates a conversational layer of text, images and multi-media with web documents (web pages, pdfs,\u00a0 etc.) Hypothes.is is an ideal tool for use in the educational context\u00a0 as it supports <span>collaboration, interactive reading, and student engagement by increasing reading comprehension and developing critical thinking skills.\u00a0 It makes reading active, visible and social.<\/span>\r\n\r\nHypothes.is is integrated with Pressbooks, so once it is turned on for a particular book, anyone with a Hypothes.is account can start annotating.\u00a0 \u00a0All students need to do is set up a free Hypothes.is account.\r\n\r\nThere are a range of different ways that Hypothes.is can be used with open textbooks.\r\n<h3>Annotation as Gloss<\/h3>\r\nHypothes.is can be used as an enhanced glossary tool.\u00a0 Like the glossary feature in Pressbooks, it can be used to provide supplementary material and definitions to the text without disrupting the reading flow.\u00a0 Hypothes.is glosses have the advantage of being more interactive - students can respond to them and ask for clarification.\r\n<h3>Seeding Texts with Discussion Questions<\/h3>\r\nInstructors can seed the text with questions to guide the students that students through the text, highlighting content that is relevant to the themes and context of the course.\u00a0 If you ask students to reply to your questions, tese replies can then be used as the basis for discussion in class.\r\n<h3>Multimedia Writing<\/h3>\r\nIn addition to enabling textual annotation of documents on the internet, Hypothes.is can also be used to annotate with images and videos. If you are asking students to annotate with images and videos, this presents a good opportunity to discuss the use of images, including how to find them and how to attribute sources. Guides such as this <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.library.ryerson.ca\/openimages\">Open Images<\/a> research guide provide ideas for sources of images and examples of good attribution statements.\r\n\r\nThese are just a few examples of how you can used web annotation.\u00a0 More <a href=\"https:\/\/web.hypothes.is\/education\/examples-of-classroom-use\/\">examples of using Hypothes.is in the classroom<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/web.hypothes.is\/education\/examples-of-classroom-use\/\">examples of classroom use<\/a> can be found on the Hypothes.is website.\r\n<h3>Additional Hypothes.is Resources<\/h3>\r\n<h4>Liquid Margins<\/h4>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/web.hypothes.is\/liquid-margins\/\">Liquid Margins<\/a> is a regular show where instructors talk about collaborative annotation.\u00a0 An archive of these presentations is available on the Hypothes.is Liquid Margins site.\u00a0 Recent sessions have included such topics as <a href=\"https:\/\/web.hypothes.is\/event\/liquid-margins-27-opening-books-social-annotation-and-oer\/\">Social Annotation and OER<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.hypothes.is\/event\/liquid-margins-25-empowering-student-writing-with-social-annotation\/\">Empowering Student Writing with Social Annotation<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/web.hypothes.is\/event\/lm003\/\">Primary Sources: Annotating History<\/a>\r\n<h4>I Annotate<\/h4>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/iannotate.org\/\">I Annotate<\/a> is an Annual conference for open annotation practices and technologies.\r\n<h4>QuickStart Guides<\/h4>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/web.hypothes.is\/quick-start-guide-for-students\/\">QuickStart Guide for Students<\/a>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/web.hypothes.is\/quick-start-guide\/\">QuickStart Guide for Teachers<\/a>\r\n<a name=\"h5p\"><\/a>\r\n<h2>H5P<\/h2>\r\nH5P is an open source content creation tool that allows you to create interactive, media-rich content for use on the web.\u00a0 It integrates with a wide range of educational platforms including Pressbooks.\u00a0 Currently there are over 45 H5P content types that can be used to increase student engagement and to allow students to assess their comprehension of materials they are studying.\r\n\r\nContent types include:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Dialog Cards<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Documentation Tool<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Drag the Words<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Fill in the Blanks<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Flashcards<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Multiple Choice<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Timelines<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Interactive Video<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Branching Scenario<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nA more extensive list of content types can be found on <a href=\"https:\/\/h5p.org\/content-types-and-applications\">h5p.org<\/a>\r\n\r\nThe majority of the H5P content types are accessible and H5P.org is actively working on making as many of them accessible as possible.\u00a0 Details about the accessibility status of each content type can be found on H5P's <a href=\"https:\/\/documentation.h5p.com\/content\/1290410474004879128\">Accessibility page.<\/a>\r\n\r\nIn addition to being available to use in Pressbooks, H5P content can be created via the <a href=\"https:\/\/h5pstudio.ecampusontario.ca\/\">H5P Studio<\/a> by Ontario post-secondary educators belonging to one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/rc-ecampus.ecampusontario.ca\/about\/#Members\">eCampusOntario member institutions<\/a>.\u00a0 This content can then be used on any educational platform where it is supported.\r\n<h3>Additional H5P Resources<\/h3>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/documentation.h5p.com\/content\/1290717699605088288\">H5P Authoring Guide<\/a>\r\nDocumentation from the H5P.org site\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/kitchen.opened.ca\/\">H5P PB Kitchen: Cooking with H5P and Pressbooks<\/a>\r\nThis is the support hub for <span>projects awarded BCCampus\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bccampus.ca\/call-for-proposals-2020-h5p-oer-development-grant\/\">H5P OER Development Grants<\/a><span>.\u00a0 It includes recordings of H5P workshops and other materials useful for working with H5P.<\/span>\r\n<h2>Knight Lab Tools<\/h2>\r\nDeveloped at the Northwestern University's Knight Lab, the following tools enable students and faculty to author multimedia rich content in their browser without having web or programming experience. From Timelines to Storymaps, the Knight Lab suite of web applications provide rich offerings for open educational practices.\r\n\r\nContent created with Knight Lab tools can be embedded in websites using an oembed link or an iframe.\r\n<h3>Storymap<\/h3>\r\n<span><a href=\"https:\/\/storymap.knightlab.com\/\">StoryMapJS<\/a> is a free tool to help you tell stories on the web that highlight the locations of a series of events. (web pages, pdfs,\u00a0 etc.) Hypothes.is is an ideal tool for use in the educational context\u00a0 as it supports <span>collaboration, interactive reading, and student engagement by increasing reading comprehension and developing critical thinking skills.\u00a0 It makes reading active, visible and social.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Hypothes.is is integrated with Pressbooks, so once it is turned on for a particular book, anyone with a Hypothes.is account can start annotating.\u00a0 \u00a0All students need to do is set up a free Hypothes.is account.<\/p>\n<p>There are a range of different ways that Hypothes.is can be used with open textbooks.<\/p>\n<h3>Annotation as Gloss<\/h3>\n<p>Hypothes.is can be used as an enhanced glossary tool.\u00a0 Like the glossary feature in Pressbooks, it can be used to provide supplementary material and definitions to the text without disrupting the reading flow.\u00a0 Hypothes.is glosses have the advantage of being more interactive &#8211; students can respond to them and ask for clarification.<\/p>\n<h3>Seeding Texts with Discussion Questions<\/h3>\n<p>Instructors can seed the text with questions to guide the students that students through the text, highlighting content that is relevant to the themes and context of the course.\u00a0 If you ask students to reply to your questions, tese replies can then be used as the basis for discussion in class.<\/p>\n<h3>Multimedia Writing<\/h3>\n<p>In addition to enabling textual annotation of documents on the internet, Hypothes.is can also be used to annotate with images and videos. If you are asking students to annotate with images and videos, this presents a good opportunity to discuss the use of images, including how to find them and how to attribute sources.
