{"id":58,"date":"2020-06-29T21:15:29","date_gmt":"2020-06-30T01:15:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pressbooks.library.ryerson.ca\/productionhandbook\/chapter\/onstage-smoking-policy\/"},"modified":"2022-08-23T15:49:06","modified_gmt":"2022-08-23T19:49:06","slug":"onstage-smoking-policy","status":"publish","type":"chapter","link":"https:\/\/pressbooks.library.torontomu.ca\/productionhandbook\/chapter\/onstage-smoking-policy\/","title":{"raw":"ONSTAGE SMOKING POLICY","rendered":"ONSTAGE SMOKING POLICY"},"content":{"raw":"<div class=\"onstage-smoking-policy\">\r\n<p class=\"import-BodyText\" style=\"margin-left: 5pt\">As smoking tobacco inside public buildings and places of work is illegal, there can be no smoking of tobacco or herbal cigarettes and pipes onstage at any time.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"import-BodyText\" style=\"margin-left: 5pt;margin-right: 13.4pt\">Should scripts or direction imply the need for smoking onstage by a performer, only electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) may be used.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"import-BodyText\" style=\"margin-left: 5pt\">If smoking onstage is required, the Front of House department will note this fact on signage posted in the lobby<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"import-Normal\" style=\"margin-left: 5pt\"><strong><em>No performer will be required to smoke against his or her will.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"import-BodyText\" style=\"margin-left: 5pt\">For realistic effects with a match onstage, the following must be present:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>A stage technician is assigned to be on fire watch for when the live flame is used<\/li>\r\n \t<li>They must be able to see the flame at all time<\/li>\r\n \t<li>If not possible, more than one crew member is assigned to fire watch detail so the flame is always in someone\u2019s unobstructed view<\/li>\r\n \t<li>The fire watch crew must be holding a fire extinguisher at all times<\/li>\r\n \t<li>A container with wet sand must be present on both sides of the stage<\/li>\r\n \t<li>An ash tray with KY \u2013 Jelly (water-based) on stage to put the match in after use in the scene<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Fire exits must be clear, assessable and clearly marked for audience to use if needed<\/li>\r\n \t<li>All costume pieces worn by actors who may be at risk of a flame accident must be treated with flame retardant<\/li>\r\n \t<li>All set piece that come within 5 feet of the fire source must be treated with flame retardant<\/li>\r\n \t<li>A live flame is not left unattended<\/li>\r\n \t<li>A live flame is extinguished as soon as the scene allows<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p class=\"import-Heading7\" style=\"text-align: center;margin-left: 9.15pt;margin-right: 9.9pt\">BEFORE A SMOKING EFFECT CAN BE USED ON STAGE IT MUST BE APPROVED BY STAFF.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"import-Normal\" style=\"text-align: center;margin-left: 8.949999999999999pt;margin-right: 9.9pt\"><strong>PLEASE SUBMIT A WRITTEN DESCRIPTION OF THE EFFECT.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"import-Normal\" style=\"margin-left: 5pt\"><strong>Pyrotechnics<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"import-Normal\" style=\"margin-left: 5pt\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"import-Normal\" style=\"text-align: center;margin-left: 72.45pt;margin-right: 73.45pt\"><strong>THE USE OF ANY PYROTECHNICS ON STAGE MUST GO THROUGH STAFF<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"import-Normal\" style=\"text-align: center;margin-left: 8.800000000000001pt;margin-right: 9.9pt\"><strong>PYROTECHNICS BELONG TO A COMPLETELY DIFFEERENT CATEGORY OF LIVE FLAME AND A DIFFERENT SET OF POLICIES APPLY TO THEIR USE<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n<h4><strong>Flame Retardant<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n<p class=\"import-BodyText\" style=\"margin-left: 5pt\">Flame Retardant must be complete whenever:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Live flame is being used on stage<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Pyrotechnics is being used on stage<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Smoking effect is being used on stage<\/li>\r\n \t<li>A flammable object it placed near a heat source.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p class=\"import-BodyText\" style=\"margin-left: 59pt\">o E.g. a light near a curtain<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"import-BodyText\" style=\"margin-left: 5pt\">You must use the correct type of flame retardant for the job.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"import-BodyText\" style=\"margin-left: 5pt\">Three main categories of flame retardants:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Wood<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Natural Fabric<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Synthetic Fabric<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p class=\"import-BodyText\" style=\"margin-left: 5pt;margin-right: 7.4pt\">Please read manufacturer\u2019s directions for proper use and applications.
