Smudging

Smudging is a very popular ceremonial practice used by Indigenous people for cleansing and purification of the mind, body, and spirit. Smudging is one of the most common uses for the four sacred medicines (Tabaco, Sage, Cedar, and Sweetgrass). To smudge you will need an Abalone Shell or bowl, matches or some sort of flame source, Tabaco and your choice of medicine (sage, cedar, sweetgrass) and lastly, a feather or you can also use your hand. There are many teachings surrounding the significance of smudging and many First Nations have slightly varied teachings (Tribal Trade Co, n.d).
