MailChimp and similar programs enable the creation of email campaigns or \u201cemail blasts\u201d with product updates and information. Functions include creating:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>HTML\/CSS-formatted emails with text and images<\/li>\r\n \t<li>mailing lists of people to whom to send the emails<\/li>\r\n \t<li>sign-up forms for web sites that enable readers to automatically sign up to receive email updates<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nMailChimp was designed for marketers who do not know HTML\/CSS but includes editing features for those who do.\r\n\r\nThis tutorial includes some topics that are not covered in detail in the course. The Mailchimp site is an example of a content-management system similar to Wordpress, which stores images and has some automated coding features. The signup sheet is an HTML form. When submitted, the form is processed using the PHP (PHP hypertext preprocessor) language, which is similar to Javascript and operates on servers.\r\n\r\nFor this tutorial we will be making an HTML-formatted email and a signup form for your web site. Include your email and at least your first name, which will populate the Merge Tag field and allow you to include a salutation, \"Dear __,\" in the email.[\/caption]\r\n<h2>Create an Email Campaign<\/h2>\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li>From the left menu, select Create &gt; Email &gt; Regular and name the campaign.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Fill out each of the items, To (select your audience), From (you), Subject (fill in), then click the Design Email button (first screen capture below).<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Select the \u201cBasic 1 Column\u201d template.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>The template includes predefined fields on the left, which appear on hover. These can be edited (pencil icon), duplicated (+), and deleted (trash can icon). Optional fields appear on the right.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Hover over the \u201cLogo\u201d field and click \u201cEdit.\u201d The Edit window will appear to the right. Under Your Default Logo, click Replace. Place your banner image by dragging-and-dropping the file into the field (second screen capture).<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Hover over the \u201cMessage\u201d field and click \u201cEdit.\u201d Place your text in the edit window at right (third screen capture).<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Above the message, write \u201cDear\u201d or \u201cHello\u201d and select Merge Tags &gt; First Name.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Place the cursor before the first paragraph and select the Content Studio icon. Upload your text-wrap image. Enter the desired width into the Edit Image window and insert.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Click the Source (\u201c&lt;&gt;\u201d) icon to edit the HTML. We recommend replicating the campaign before sending so you can go back and edit it later.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>When satisfied with the campaign\u2019s design, return to the Campaigns window, replicate the campaign, and send it to yourself.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Your email will contain a link, \u201cView in Browser.\u201d Please submit this link for the assignment.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<h2>Create a Signup Form for Your Web Site<\/h2>\r\nThe signup form enables readers of your web site to sign up for email campaigns. The form is different from the email campaign itself.\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li>Click Create and select Signup Form; name the form and click Begin.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>The \u201cEmbedded Forms\u201d template includes a basic \u201cSubscribe\u201d form that request\u2019s the reader\u2019s email (required), first name, and last name (optional).<\/li>\r\n \t<li>To put this form on one of your web pages, copy the HTML code below the Preview and paste into your HTML document. Note the instructional comments in the code recommend placing the &lt;style&gt; tag in the &lt;head&gt; of your page.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Also note the bug in Mailchimp that the link to the stylesheet is missing the prefix \u201chttps:\u201d. According to Prof. Dr. J\u00f6rg Westbomke from the Hochschule der Medien in Stuttgart, Germany, SEO includes two types of optimization: on-page and off-page. On-page optimization includes steps that web publishers can take to increase the visibility of their sites to search engines. Off-page optimization refers to external factors, including links to a site from other sites, bounce factor, points in social media.\r\n<h2>Checklist for Search Engine Optimization (SEO)<\/h2>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Correct any spelling errors in the text.<\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Add a title in the head of each page, &lt;title&gt;Title Goes Here&lt;\/title&gt;<\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Add a meta tag with a description of the site, &lt;meta name=\"description\" content=\"description goes here\"&gt;.<\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Add a meta tag with keywords, &lt;meta name=\"keywords\" content=\"keywords go here\"&gt;.<\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Add \u201calt\u201d tags describing all the images, &lt;img src=\u201dimage.jpg\u201d alt=\u201ddescription goes here\u201d \/&gt;.<\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rename the html pages (and rewrite links) with a descriptive URL.<\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Add some headings &lt;h1&gt; \u00a0that describe the text.<\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Emphasize important words (that you want the web crawler to pick up) with emphasis &lt;em&gt; and bold &lt;strong&gt; tags.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Google Analytics<\/h2>\r\n\u201cGet to know your customers\u201d is the theme of <a href=\"https:\/\/marketingplatform.google.com\/about\/analytics\">Google Analytics <em>[New Window]<\/em><\/a>. This site provides a code that you can place in your web site to get information about customers \u2014 where are they from, how often do they visit your site, how long do they stay, and what pages do they visit?\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li>To use Google Analytics, you will need a non-ryerson email (Ryerson already uses Google Analytics so you won't be able to access the service using an @ryerson.ca email).<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Go to google.com\/analytics and create a new account with your non-Ryerson email.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>In the left navigation bar, go to Admin &gt; Setup Assistant &gt; Create Property and type in the URL you want to track.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>In Setup Assistant go to Tag Installation &gt; Property (site) &gt; Global site tag . Copy the 8-line code snippet to place in the head of your web pages.
