1.4.3 Consultative NP
Consultative NPs are:
- Often hired by outside agencies or organizations
- Support the LTC home through a contract or memorandum of understanding
- Often support multiple LTC homes
- Work within the legislated scope of practice (per provincial/territorial legislation)
- Provide primary care to residents
- Support around emergency department (ED) diversion, hospital admission avoidance and repatriation
Consultative NP roles include:
- Care coordination and delivery
- Acute & episodic care for illnesses/injuries
- Palliative & EOL care
- Family meetings
- Support with staff education/capacity building
- Participate in advisory committees
- Support quality improvement initiatives
