Module 1: Introduction & Overview of NP Role in LTC

1.5 Legislation

Legislation & regulation play a role in supporting NP practice. Without a pan-Canadian licensure process, NPs are required to register through their provincial or territorial nursing regulators. Provincial & territorial nursing regulatory bodies protect the public and are designed to ensure that high quality care is delivered.

Regulatory bodies are responsible for the following related to NP practice:

  • Setting entry to practice competencies
  • Standards of practice
  • Licensure requirements
  • Approving educational programs
  • Establishing continuing competence requirements[1][2]
