Module 3: Education & LTC

86 3.4 Professional Development

Training in LTC, similar to any other health care and workplace setting, is determined by organizational and provincial/territorial legislative requirements.

Educational and training requirements are also guided by entry to practice, standards of practice and even legislative requirements.

In Ontario, the Fixing Long Term Care Act [1] has mandatory training requirements for all staff and providers working in LTC. This includes the following:

  • Resident’s Bill of Rights
  • LTC home mission statement
  • LTC home policy on zero tolerance of abuse & neglect of residents
  • LTC home policy to minimize restraints
  • Fire prevention & safety
  • Emergency & evacuation procedures
  • Infection prevention & control

Familiarize yourself with the mandatory training that is required for your LTC setting and any provincial/territorial legislative requirements.
