Module 1: Introduction & Overview of NP Role in LTC

1.2 Program Introduction

Theoretical Practice Frameworks

Frameworks of concepts are essential to guide NP practice and entry-level registration standards.

There are a number of theoretical practice frameworks in the literature for NPs including but not limited to the APN practice framework and NP Core Competencies (Canadian Nurses Association (CNA)).

The APN and NP Core Competency frameworks are further described in this module.

The CNA further describes a NP practice conceptual model which is comprised of the following components:

  • NP
  • Context
  • Patient
  • Discipline[1][2]

It also includes recommended action statements for APN, definite and role, description, liability, collaboration & consultation and interprofessional practice.

These components are required to ensure NP sustainability.
