Module 1: Introduction & Overview of NP Role in LTC

1.4 Nurse Practitioner Models of Care

NPs work in a variety of models and settings. Some of the NP models include the following:

  • Geographical (e.g. remote, rural, urban)
  • Institution based (e.g. community, primary care, acute care, corrections, LTC, etc.)
  • Population based (e.g. age related, Indigenous, low-socioeconomic, chronic diseases, etc.)
  • Practice configurations (e.g. solo, interdisciplinary, consultative, etc.)

In LTC, there are a few different models of care that include:

  • Attending NP (employee or contractually hired)
  • Consultative NP (mobile response team, interdisciplinary primary care team)[1]

The attending NP and consultative NP models of care will be further reviewed.
