1.4.2 Attending NP

Attending NPs can be:

  • NPs that are hired by the LTC home
  • Employees/contracted by the home
  • Some have private contractual arrangements with the home Medical Director (MD) or the primary care practice supporting the LTC home
  • Work within the legislated scope of practice (per provincial or territorial legislation)
  • Provide primary care to residents

Attending NP roles include:

  • Admissions & physical assessments
  • Care coordination and delivery
  • Preventive care
  • Acute & episodic care for illnesses/injuries
  • Chronic disease management
  • Palliative & End-of-Life (EOL) care
  • Family meetings/care conferences
  • Support with staff education/capacity building
  • Participate in advisory committees
  • Support quality improvement initiatives[1]
