1.4.3 Consultative NP

Consultative NPs are:

  • Often hired by outside agencies or organizations
  • Support the LTC home through a contract or memorandum of understanding
  • Often support multiple LTC homes
  • Work within the legislated scope of practice (per provincial/territorial legislation)
  • Provide primary care to residents
  • Support around emergency department (ED) diversion, hospital admission avoidance and repatriation

Consultative NP roles include:

  • Care coordination and delivery
  • Acute & episodic care for illnesses/injuries
  • Palliative & EOL care
  • Family meetings
  • Support with staff education/capacity building
  • Participate in advisory committees
  • Support quality improvement initiatives
