Module 1: Introduction & Overview of NP Role in LTC

1.5.2 LTC Legislation

In Canada, health care jurisdiction is a shared responsibility between federal and provincial governments. LTC legislation regulating the delivery of services to LTC residents is implemented in all provinces and territories in Canada.

The Canada Health Act defines that health services must be included by provincial health insurance programs to qualify for federal funds, however LTC is not included. LTC is considered an extended health care service but public funds are allocated to support LTC.[1]

LTC facilities provide health & social services to residents who require additional health care services due to physical or cognitive impairments and are supported through provincial jurisdiction.
