Module 1: Introduction & Overview of NP Role in LTC

1.7 Nurse Practitioner Core Compentencies

The Canadian Nurses Association[1] has developed a Core Competency Framework for Nurse Practitioners. This framework identifies a core set of competencies for NPs to practice in Canadian jurisdictions, all practice settings and include all populations. Competency statements identify the knowledge, skills, judgements & attributes that guide NP practice.

The integration and performance of these competencies is required for safe, competent and ethical NP practice.

NP core competencies include four main categories:

  1. Professional Role, Responsibility and Accountability
  2. Health Assessment & Diagnosis
  3. Therapeutic Management
  4. Health Promotion & Prevention of Illness & Injury
