1.7.1 Professional Role, Responsibilities and Accountabilities

This core competency includes clinical practice, collaboration, consultation & referral, research & leadership.

Clinical practice:

  • Practices in accordance with federal & provincial/territorial legislation, professional & ethical standards & policy relevant to NP practice
  • Understands change in scope of practice from RN and responsibilities & accountabilities of a NP
  • Utilizes knowledge of determinants of health, diversity & cultural safety in practice
  • Applies knowledge of development & life stages, pathophysiology, psychopathology, epidemiology, infectious diseases, behavioural sciences, demographics & family processes
  • Incorporates knowledge of normal health events, acute illness/injuries, chronic diseases, comorbidities & emergency health needs
  • Integrates principles related to resource allocation & cost effectiveness into practice
  • Uses teaching/learning strategies to provide evidence informed  diagnostic information & education Promotes safe care by mitigating harm and addressing immediate risks
  • Discloses adverse events & reports in accordance to relevant legislation & organizational policies
  • Documents data, assessment findings, diagnoses, plans of care, therapeutic interventions & client response in a timely/accurate manner
  • Engages in ongoing professional development and accepts responsibility for maintaining NP competence[1]
