20 2.2.2 Caring for Individuals with Life Limiting Illness

A progressive, life-limiting illness is an illness that:

  • Affects a person’s health and quality of life
  • Gets worse over time
  • Can lead to death in the near future

Examples of Life Limiting Illness includes:

  • MS
  • ALS
  • Dementia
  • COPD
  • CKD
  • COPD
  • Liver disease
  • Cancer[1][2][3]

Considerations include:

  • Early identification, assessment, discussions and education
  • Advanced care planning
  • Individualized, person-centred plan
  • Psychosocial aspects of care
  • Caregiver support
  • Timely access to palliative care
