Module 2: Direct Comprehensive Primary Care in the LTC Setting

65 2.7.8 Organ and Tissue Donation

Since 2018, Health Canada has been leading an initiative called the Organ Donation and Transplantation Collaborative. Organ donation needs to be done surgically & immediately after pronouncement of death using neurologically determined death. This makes organ donation in LTC very difficult.

  • All patients have the potential to donate tissue after death.
  • Tissues do not require blood flow at the time of recovery and therefore the opportunity to donate tissue is possible for most patients and families.
  • ASK!
  • If organ donation is being considered, follow the process in your province/area[1][2]
