78 3.1 Role and Scope of NP as Educator and Coach

As leaders in health care, NPs play the roles of provider, mentor, educator, researcher, advocate and administrator.

The Canadian Nurses Association [1] identifies advanced practice nursing educational competencies which include:

  • Plan, initiate, coordinate and conduct educational programs
  • Disseminate new knowledge through formal and informal channels
  • Recognize and address learning needs
  • Act as a mentor, preceptor, or role model for colleagues and other team members
  • Create opportunities to learn in order to optimize client care
  • Contribute to the knowledge, clinical skills and client care abilities of team members
  • Contribute and advocate for an organizational culture that supports professional growth, continuous learning & collaborative practice
  • Build capacity & support succession planning
  • Collaborate with academic institutions and maintain cross-appointments

NP coaching is identified as leading to increased:

  • Confidence
  • Productivity
  • Job satisfaction
  • Career longevity
