78 3.1 Role and Scope of NP as Educator and Coach
As leaders in health care, NPs play the roles of provider, mentor, educator, researcher, advocate and administrator.
The Canadian Nurses Association [1] identifies advanced practice nursing educational competencies which include:
- Plan, initiate, coordinate and conduct educational programs
- Disseminate new knowledge through formal and informal channels
- Recognize and address learning needs
- Act as a mentor, preceptor, or role model for colleagues and other team members
- Create opportunities to learn in order to optimize client care
- Contribute to the knowledge, clinical skills and client care abilities of team members
- Contribute and advocate for an organizational culture that supports professional growth, continuous learning & collaborative practice
- Build capacity & support succession planning
- Collaborate with academic institutions and maintain cross-appointments
