79 3.1.2 Teaching and Learning Skills

NPs are continuously learning and also support with others learning.

NPs also support with mentoring of both staff and NP colleagues.

Mentoring requires the following skills & attributes:

  • Effective communication skills
  • Patience
  • An ability to guide and motivate mentees with non-judgmental feedback

Key techniques to mentoring success include:

  • Frame of reference
  • Preparation
  • Communication techniques
  • Culture of safety

In LTC, NPs support education with staff including registered and allied health care professionals, residents, families & caregivers. Education needs within LTC can include:

  • Fine tuning physical assessment skills
  • Developing/expanding critical thinking skills
  • Applying knowledge to practice
  • Procedural education/support
  • Infection prevention and control

In terms of education, the following are effective methods to support teaching & learning in LTC:

  • One-on-one
  • Written materials
  • Group teaching
  • Videos and online content
