NPs are continuously learning and also support with others learning.
NPs also support with mentoring of both staff and NP colleagues.
Mentoring requires the following skills & attributes:
- Effective communication skills
- Patience
- An ability to guide and motivate mentees with non-judgmental feedback
Key techniques to mentoring success include:
- Frame of reference
- Preparation
- Communication techniques
- Culture of safety
In LTC, NPs support education with staff including registered and allied health care professionals, residents, families & caregivers. Education needs within LTC can include:
- Fine tuning physical assessment skills
- Developing/expanding critical thinking skills
- Applying knowledge to practice
- Procedural education/support
- Infection prevention and control
In terms of education, the following are effective methods to support teaching & learning in LTC:
- One-on-one
- Written materials
- Group teaching
- Videos and online content
