Module 4: Research & LTC

106 4.2.2 Implementation Strategies

To be an effective implementation facilitator:

  • Ask questions to assist the client in determining the stage of readiness for change
  • Identify the system: key people, reporting relationships
  • Identify allies and potential allies

Where do key influencers and decision-makers sit with respect to your proposed program?

  • Be clear about goals, strengths and weaknesses
  • Analyze from the adversary’s point of view
  • Express empathy – builds trust
  • Emphasize self-efficacy – you believe in them

Implementation strategies include the following:

  • Involve others (patients, clinicians, leaders etc.)
  •  Recruit, designate and train leaders for the change effort
  •  Facilitator/Champions/Local Opinion Leaders
  •  Obtain and use stakeholder feedback (e.g. participants)
  •  Tailor implementation to address barriers (e.g. timing)
  •  Promote adaptability of intervention (unless fidelity is the goal)
  •  Use small tests of change
