106 4.2.2 Implementation Strategies
To be an effective implementation facilitator:
- Ask questions to assist the client in determining the stage of readiness for change
- Identify the system: key people, reporting relationships
- Identify allies and potential allies
Where do key influencers and decision-makers sit with respect to your proposed program?
- Be clear about goals, strengths and weaknesses
- Analyze from the adversary’s point of view
- Express empathy – builds trust
- Emphasize self-efficacy – you believe in them
Implementation strategies include the following:
- Involve others (patients, clinicians, leaders etc.)
- Recruit, designate and train leaders for the change effort
- Facilitator/Champions/Local Opinion Leaders
- Obtain and use stakeholder feedback (e.g. participants)
- Tailor implementation to address barriers (e.g. timing)
- Promote adaptability of intervention (unless fidelity is the goal)
- Use small tests of change
