Module 4: Research & LTC

107 4.2.3 Quality Improvement

Quality Improvement (Qi) is a systematic, iterative, and formal approach that involves analyzing practice performance and making efforts to improve performance.[1]

Key elements:

  • QI is a team activity: involve all those who will be affected or involved (including residents and/or family members).
  • Data collection and analysis are key components of QI: identify potential areas for improvement, set measurable goals and monitor the effectiveness of change.
  • It’s about progress, not perfection: if there are shortfalls or failures, try a different approach.
