111 4.3.2 Evaluation of NP Practice in LTC

Canadian Nurse Practitioner Initiative:

  • Needs-based simulation model for health human resources
  • Implementation and Evaluation Toolkit for Nurse Practitioners in Canada
  • Applicable to primary care NPs in Canada
  • Considers population health needs and services required to support identified needs
  • Based on the PEPPA framework, literature review, research, stakeholder consultation and best practices review
  • Serves as a practical guide to evaluating the necessity and readiness for the NP role
  • Identifies key steps and factors to support the implementation of the APN/NP role and monitoring of its effectiveness

Conceptual Framework for NP Role Evaluation:

  • Designed to evaluate the NP role in acute care settings
  • Revised from the Nursing Role Effectiveness Model, which was developed to facilitate the identification and investigation of nursing sensitive outcomes
  • Represents the multifaceted system of interconnected elements that are present in APN/NP practice and influence role effectiveness

Framework looks at three components:

  • Structure —inclusive of patient, APN and administrative variables
  • Process — comprising of the APN role elements and the ways in which the position is enacted
  • Outcomes — including patient- and cost-related outcomes

This framework proposes specific relationships among the structure, process and outcome components.
