112 4.3.3 Performance Measurement

Quality Improvement Plan (QIP):

Health Quality Ontario[1] identifies QIP as including the following:

  • Recognized, acknowledged set of commitments that a healthcare organization makes to its patients/clients/residents, staff and community
  • Goal to advance quality through fixed targets and actions
  • QIPs are used in various sectors to assist organizations in providing quality programs and services
  • Addresses efficiency, patient centred care, safe & effective care

NPs and their respective teams can be evaluated within the context of their role within the LTC sector through elements of the QIP.

Additional examples of NP practice evaluative outcomes & performance measurement have included:

  • Potentially avoidable emergency department visits for LTC residents
  • Antipsychotic use
  • Palliative care services
  • Health Standards Organizations (HSO) and CIHI’s Long Term Standards [2][3][4]
