Orientation of NPs new to LTC provides a chance to develop mentorship within your organization to grow and retain a NP team. Orientation and peer support facilitate successful transition into new NP roles. Mentoring new NPs in LTC practice involves:

  • Teaching
  • Opportunity Seeking
  • Relationship Building[1][2][3]

Orientation for nurse practitioners new to LTC (including students) involves:

  • Understanding LTC  in your province
  • Reading & understanding legislative acts specific to province/territory
  • Canadian Association of LTC
  • Data collection and mandatory reporting
  • LTC home specific
  • Mandatory education
  • Documentation & EMR orientation
  • Medication management
  • Diagnostic testing and laboratory test ordering
  • Meeting the team
  • Leadership
  • Medical & allied health team
  • Becoming familiar with the role and responsibilities of NPs in LTC
  • Provincial/territorial roles & responsibilities
  • Legislative requirements & guiding documents[4][5]
