Module 7: Optimizing Health Systems in LTC

176 7.4.2 Inter RAI

The RAI assessment is used to identify a resident’s strengths, areas for growth, needs and the services received. The RAI assessment is a legislated requirement in some provinces and the Continuing Care Reporting System (CCRS) and assessment is to be completed:

  • Within 14 days of admission (full assessment)
  • Quarterly (partial)
  • Annually (full) and
  • As needed when there are significant changes in health status

The RAI assessment collects patient data and analyzes patient health data to produce patient health outcomes scores, care quality indicators, Clinical Assessment Protocols (CAPS), and Resident Assessment Protocols (RAPS). Data for the RAI assessment is gathered from available documentation, resident, family, and staff.

The RAI assessment is also used to produce longitudinal statistics for individual care homes and is useful for quality improvement, program planning, understanding the population, as well as allocating resources/
