185 7.6.4 Resident, SDM, Family and Caregiver Partnerships

LTC home residents need opportunities to express their needs/wishes, and benefit from extra safeguards due to their vulnerability.

LTC licensee are required to have a resident & family council. In many Canadian jurisdictions this is a required regulation.

Health Standards Organization (HSO) [1] LTC Services guidelines include:

  1. Upholding Resident Centered Care, the LTC leaders:
    • Respect residents’ rights and responsibilities
    • Enable resident-centred care
    • Promote the role and presence of essential care partners
    • Actively communicate with residents
  2. Enabling a Meaningful Quality of Life for Resident, the LTC leaders:
    • Enable residents’ meaningful quality of life by providing a welcoming, home-like environment and purposeful daily activities
