Land Acknowledgement

“Toronto is in the ‘Dish With One Spoon Territory’. The Dish With One Spoon is a treaty between the Anishinaabe, Mississaugas and Haudenosaunee that bound them to share the territory and protect the land. Subsequent Indigenous Nations and peoples, Europeans and all newcomers have been invited into this treaty in the spirit of peace, friendship and respect.” (Link to the Aboriginal Education Council land acknowledgement)

This acknowledgement is not meant as a historical reflection, but rather it’s a reminder of our shared responsibility to each other, to the land, and to the original caretakers of this land.

While it’s important to acknowledge the land and the territory, we must also acknowledge that it’s only a small part of cultivating strong relationships with Indigenous peoples and communities and challenging the legacies of colonialism.
